Open Question: How to I deal with my mother-in-law?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

ever since I met my husband, his mom has been so cold towards me. She had basically a death grip on him (and his finances!) until I came and “rocked the boat.” She basically made him choose between me and her and he chose me. Now she refuses to talk to my husband as well. She seems to be trying to get back at him by spending so much money and attention on his younger sister, meanwhile never calling us and also turning the rest of the family against us. We thought about writing a letter, talking to other family members to explain our side…not sure what to do. The rest of the family is so brain washed by the lies she has told. Does anyone have any suggestions? It’s really put a strain on our marriage.

Open Question: Should I Trade-In!?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I’ve just brought a 07 Dodge Caliber 2 weeks ago. I would like to trade it in. The car is too small for my family and we’re not happy with it. I would like a 08 Dodge Avenger. Financing $13,877…will pay $416/monthly. My interest rate is high because of credit (22%). Do you think it is a good idea to trade it in? Is it possible?

Open Question: What should I do to get the best loan?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I currently have an awful mortgage. I took out a 100% loan 6 months ago and want to refinance. My loan was for $211k and the home value is currently $220k. My current rate is 7.875% and payment is $1705 with a 30-yr fixed loan. I previously did not qualify for an FHA loan due to a high debt/income ratio of 43/43 but have since lowered the ratio to 39/39 with a recent pay raise. The home is still at 100% financed and I have only $2500 for closing. My credit rating is excellent.

Based upon all my info what type of loan should I get. I will qualify for FHA but would pay a large monthly amount in PMI. Is an 80/20 loan a viable option? Is it possible to borrow 20% from a family member and immediately take out a HELOC to pay back the family member? Any help or suggestions would be grately appreciated.
There is no pre-payment penalty.

Open Question: Texas Residents - Can anyone tell me how my husband can go about getting his child support lowered?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

See, he wants very much to pay the support. At the time of their court appearance, my husband had a well-paying job- but for a family of 5 (with our three children together), it’s wasn’t very much. So NOT very much, that the state approved our kids to be put on CHIPS to cover their medical insurance. I had to send them documents to prove our household income for them to consider that we couldn’t afford to pay for medical insurance for OUR kids. At the time of the court date, my husband did not submit the medical information for our kids to the child support office, so therefore would that have made a difference in the amount he has to pay or how they would’ve handled the business for the child’s medical insurance. What I’m leaving out, is that he had to pay the portion for his child support along with a portion of almost the same amount for the child’s medical insurance. My hubby had just began his job then, so his insurance hadn’t kicked in yet, so he was ordered to pay for the insurance for the child which is on the mother’s group plan through her job. The nsurance payment is just as much as the child support payment. We want to know what we can do about that, and also how to get his payments lowered because he now has a new job because of layoffs, and he makes a whole four dollars less than the job that was reported the day of the court appearance /order. Again, he wants very much to take care of his child, but is there anything that can be done when it’s extremely causing my household to be completely broke. I tried speaking with the mother to see if we could go out and get an individual plan for the child, but the mother won’t have it - AT ALL. We had , well I - had a very civil conversation with her concerning the issue, and she made it very clear that she won’t do anything to help us - even when I told her how this is effecting my household and children and our finances. Really, we just want the order to be fair and make sure what we’re paying is fair to our household and considerate of these other children. And my husband got laid off his job very shortly after the court date and was on unemployment for eight months, went on to get a much lower paying job, and now we’re stuck with all hese payments and fees. They not only kept his full tax return, but they also went up an extra $150 on his monthly payments because of being behind. He’s only like 2 months behind. So now, they have his entire refund and getting more money from his checks. HIs checks now, are almost useless to bring home. I’m rambling now, so could anyone PLEASE give me any advice they might have.

NOTE: Not everybody is trying to get out of paying child support. We just want it to be fair and correct regarding all parties.

Open Question: Is it a better idea to pay 100 more into your mortgage or 100 more into your IRA??

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Just like most American Families right now, we’re trying to stretch every dollar. We plan on staying in the house for 8 years then moving on. We financed 250K/30yr/6%.

Open Question: Isolated by age and background, how do I make more friends and stop people judging me without knowing me?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

I was born poor. I had a lot of health, finance and family problems and few opportunities early in life. I worked hard and have overcome these problems, but I feel they have set me back in life a lot. I am 28 years old now and in college with people almost a decade younger than me who have never had to face the same things I did, and who view me as the odd man out. Judge me because I have not achieved what they think I should. many of them are just rich kids whose parents take care of everything for them while they drink or get high. I’ve worked damn hard, I have ambition, never touched drugs but I am still viewed as a loser.

I am feeling somewhat isolated, I have a few good friends who I really value and some people at college are cool but i would like to meet more good people, and find another girlfriend after being single for a few months.

How do I meet more people and prove I am not a loser but a hardworking, honest, good guy who just hasn’t got where he is going yet?

Open Question: My fiance and I would like to start a farm, how do we get going?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

My finance and I are very interested to start up a farm - we are both very industrious individuals and don’t mind the hard work it would take. Mostly, we are influenced due to the various food market fluctuations and believe it would be a valuable asset to practice self sufficiency. We live in Ontario Canada, and are somewhat bewildered by all of the seemingly plenty “resources” offered by the government for farm start up costs. Is there anyone out there who might be knowledgeable of the best path for a couple of young people to get start-up loans for farms, or perhaps any good ideas to assist us in our search for information? His family currently owns 120 acres of good land north of Kirkland Lake Ontario which has been proven solid farming soil - as it used to be a functioning farm in his grandfather’s days. Does anyone have any advice? We’re in the dark and in need of some guidance. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond.
